Fun runs launched

Posted by news desk in Local News, 3rd July 2008, 12:21pm

The Manches Moor Park 10k and Junior Fun Runs were launched this week with the backing and support of Three Rivers District Council Chairman, Councillor Chris Lloyd.

The fun runs raise much needed cash to support the Lynda Jackson Macmillan Centre (LJMC), a cancer support and information centre based at Mount Vernon Hospital in Northwood.

Councillor Lloyd has chosen LJMC as one of his three Chairman's charities, meaning he will be raising money to support the centre throughout his year as Chairman.

Councillor Chris Lloyd, said:"I am delighted to be supporting this year's Manches Moor Park 10k and Junior fun runs. Not only are the runs in aid of a really worthwhile cause, but they also enable residents young and old to get fit and active whilst training for and participating in the event. I have just begun my training for the run and I am looking forward to completing the course in September, come rain or shine!

"I would like to see the biggest entry for this event so there are plenty of people to cheer runners over the line and, more importantly, it will mean more money can be raised to help support people with cancer. Both my father and my father-in-law had cancer. Last year a colleague at work died of cancer in his twenties."

The race, which this year will take place on Sunday 21 September, has become popular with local runners because it is largely traffic free.

Based at Merchant Taylors' School, the 10k route starts with a lap of the playing fields before heading out into the Moor Park Estate, over Rickmansworth and Moor Park golf courses and back to the school grounds.

The 10k race is preceded by Junior Fun Runs for children of all ages, which are held within the school grounds. `Although advertised as a race, the event is open to runners, joggers and walkers of all standards.

Everybody who completes the course will receive a medal to celebrate their achievement. Trophies will also be presented for the top three in each age group, as well as prizes for the winning teams.

Since they were first organised in 2002, the fun runs have raised more than £150,000 for the Lynda Jackson Macmillan Centre. London solicitors Manches LLP has sponsored the fun runs since 2005 and helped them to grow to become the largest annual event in the LJMC's fundraising calendar.

The heart of the LJMC's work is the Drop-in centre where patients and relatives can call in for advice, information or someone to talk to. The centre also offers complementary therapies and counselling as well as benefits advice.

Every penny that is raised by the Manches Moor Park 10k will go towards the provision of these services, helping meet the 15,000 requests for help the LJMC receives each year.

Buzz Coster, LJMC marketing manager, said: "There is increasing evidence for the benefits of exercise and it has always been appropriate for the LJMC to organise this fundraising event. We are delighted to have the support of Three Rivers District Council in promoting both the event and also healthy living. If people start now, there's still time to get in training for September."
