Rickmansworth school place crisis addressed by council

Hertfordshire County Council’s cabinet has agreed a financial package which includes a fund of over £82 million to increase the number of school places in various parts of the county, including Rickmansworth, where pupil numbers have increased.

Speaking specifically about the recognised need for additional places serving the Rickmansworth area, Richard Thake, executive member for education and skills, said: “In our recent report, Meeting the Demand for School Places, the county council has updated its forecasts for the number of primary and secondary aged children in the years ahead.  This is a formal recognition by the council of the need to increase capacity in a number of areas.  This budget provision will ensure that, as specific high priority schemes are developed, we will have the resources available to fund them.”

“We are reviewing existing provision to see if there are options to expand local schools, but my expectation is that an entirely new school in the Rickmansworth area is likely to be needed,” he said.

Thake added: “The County Council does not own a piece of land suitable for this purpose and will be reliant on the outcome of Three Rivers District Council's process to review its Local Development framework.  Officers of the two councils are working together to try to identify an appropriate site.”
