The Hangover, Woodside

23rd June 2009, 5:23pm

WeLoveWatford.co.uk’s regular reviewer Pete York is no stranger to a hangover, and amid missing teeth, Mike Tyson, and taser torture he’s managed to piece together Todd Phillips’ latest film, The Hangover...

I have to admit, I found this film physically painful to watch. Within the first five minutes of the opening credits, nights of over indulging and the morning-after consequences came flooding back to me. In the film the audience wake up alongside the main characters - with absolutely no recollection of what happened the night before. It felt strangely familiar…

Retracing your steps in search of the groom that you lost during a bachelor party in Las Vegas is a plot that opens itself to too many comical possibilities, and perhaps The Hangover could have pushed the boundaries slightly more than it did.

Yet, make no mistake, this film is certainly not short of a laugh. Missing teeth, Mike Tyson, and taser torture had me doubled over for the majority of the film, and I was pleased to see less than familiar faces playing main roles in a Todd Phillips film this time.

Seasoned comic veterans like Will Ferrell, Owen Wilson, or Vince Vaughn would have down played the plot of The Hangover which is what really makes this film. The introduction of Fat Jesus, the slightly ill-minded younger brother of the groom, played by Zach Galifianakis, signals a new wave of comedians that I’m excited about seeing more of.

The formula is the same though, and The Hangover follows a long string of ‘bloke joke’ films such as Road Trip, Old School, and more recently Superbad, without bringing anything particularly new to the party. But the comic appeal is still alive in these films, which is why already a sequel has been commissioned.

Now will someone please pass me the Resolve…

i agree, saw it over the weekend...very funny. Just shows that Will Ferrell, Owen Wilson, or Vince Vaughn aren't needed for these films to work.

Not all bloke joke though, everyone should find a funny moment in this one.
